The most recent focused on a woman offering help filling out Attendance Allowance forms. She said she did this out of the goodness of her heart, but also demanded 50 euros plus the first four weeks of the benefits claim. The scale of the deception was uncovered when our team made a copy of the form Julie Potter completed on behalf of undercover war photographer, Peter Jordan. We found that it contained a string of falsehoods and exaggerations. Had it been submitted to the Department of Work and Pensions, officials would have been persuaded that Peter, who was due to climb a mountain the following week, was unable to wash or use the toilet independently, and could not be safely left alone for more than four hours. Julie said she had helped customers make hundreds of similar claims over the past decade, potentially costing the taxpayer hundreds of thousands of pounds.

The second focused on the tens of millions of pounds in UK disability benefits being spent overseas. For both articles we are grateful to the help and guidance provided by an unnamed whistleblower.
Following a three-month long investigation, in which a mountain of evidence was accumulated, the story of Melanie Bull - aka Lola Steel - can finally be told. Melanie is estimated to have made £1,000 a month working as a mistress specialising in financial domination. Her ‘paypig’ clients would send money and gifts in exchange for being humiliated and scorned over the internet. There’s nothing wrong with servicing a kink of course, but Melanie was simultaneously claiming up to £1,000 in Universal Credit and disability benefits including Personal Independence Payments (PIP), which raises questions about why she is entitled to so much of taxpayer’s money given that she is able to make a decent living online. Last week I had the pleasure of meeting Amy Winehouse’s closest friend and housemate Catriona Gourlay, who was one of the last people to speak to her before she passed away in the same bedroom where they spent some precious final minutes together. We arranged to meet in a pub near her house in Margate on a beautiful sunny day clement enough for us to sit in the beer garden. She was wearing sunglasses to hide tired eyes that have spent much of the past four years crying during a bruising court battle with the star’s dad Mitch over treasured personal items sold at auction. The case left her bankrupt and bereft, for not only did it invite ignominy and financial ruin, it also caused a permanent rift with the Winehouse family. However, as I delved into Catriona’s many memories of her best friend - some hilarious, others disturbing and scary - she was revived by her recollection of the love they shared and spoke with incredible candour about those years.
